about

Philip Zoubek and his trio consisting of double bassist David Helm and drummer Dominik Mahnig return with a new body of work. Once again, the outfit goes all out to precipitate novel forms, while working within the constraints of a classical jazz formation. The result is characterized by
seamless transitions between fixed compositions and free improvisation. As listeners, we are transported into a charged space, one that oscillates between the contemplative and what could be described as something of a sonic assault on the mind/body. For the purposes of this release, the band’s palette of sound has been expanded by the inclusion of a synthesizer and a variety of preparations to the grand piano. The silver-screen compatibility of this music should notbe understated! Another way to look at this material is that it’s a study of the nature of sonic co-existence, with the band constantly pushing towards a new vista of sonic unity. Creating singular combinations of interlocking rhythms and harmonies; using tension and the inner elasticity of sound as a scaffold to build on. Each resulting instrumental is a stand-alone universe: a platform for further improvisatory explorations to be embarked on in a live setting. In this light, this body of work can be seen as a seed for a living sonic labyrinth. An ongoing trialogue between very distinct and engaged voices, each one mindful of the next, yet wholly committed to forging their own path through this Kaleidoscopic maze.
